Working as a lorry driver in the UK is a rewarding job. You’ll get to travel to new parts of the country, handle your own time, and work with many different people. Plus, the wage is higher than you might expect.
Are you interested in becoming a lorry driver in the UK?
Firstly, you should check the UK lorry driver job requirements, to make sure you meet the criteria.
UK Lorry Driver Job Requirements
To be a lorry driver in the UK, there are certain requirements you have to meet.
- You have to be over the age of 18
- You need a full UK driving licence (Class C). You need to have held this licence for at least a year before you can apply.
- Hold a CPC (Driver Certificate of Professional Competence). This is a professional driving qualification needed to drive vehicles which weigh over 3500kg.
To get a CPC licence, you’ll need to apply for a bus licence or a HGV licence (on a provisional basis). There’s 5 tests you need to qualify, and it requires 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years to stay qualified.
Once you’ve ticked all these boxes, you’ll be able to start applying for a lorry driver job in the UK.

Desirable Skills and Qualities
Working as a lorry driver isn’t as simple as people think. While you’ll need to be a great driver, there are other skills and attributes that employers will look for. Employers from logistics companies will look for candidates who are
- Patient
- Able to take responsibility for loading and unloading
- Organised and realistic with their time
- Able to concentrate
- Able to fill out paperwork correctly and accurately
Also, while it’s not always essential for every lorry driver job, some employers will search for candidates with previous experience in logistics. For example, if you’ve worked as a courier driver in a smaller scale vehicle and this may be advantageous to your application (but it’s not always necessary for every lorry driver job).
